Plan 5–7 days for Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, and the South Coast. Allow at least 10 days for the full Ring Road, and consider additional time during winter when weather can disrupt driving.

June through August offers long daylight hours, easier driving, and the greatest access to hiking areas. September through March brings a chance of seeing the northern lights, but winter weather can affect roads and tours.

Cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere. Most visitors need little or no cash.

A rental car offers the most flexibility outside Reykjavík because Iceland does not have passenger trains. Organized tours are a good alternative if you do not want to drive. Always check road and weather conditions before leaving.

Bring waterproof and windproof outerwear, warm layers, sturdy shoes, gloves, and a hat—even in summer. Pack a swimsuit for geothermal pools and lagoons.
