Plan at least half a day for the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica. A full day allows for a slower visit, time in St. Peter’s Square, and fewer scheduling pressures.

April through May and September through October offer more comfortable temperatures than midsummer. Visit early in the morning and reserve timed tickets when possible to reduce waiting.

Cards are accepted for official tickets, shops, and many nearby businesses. Keep a small amount of euros for cafés, small purchases, and church offerings.

Vatican City is explored on foot. From elsewhere in Rome, use the metro, bus, taxi, or walk. A car is unnecessary and parking nearby is difficult.

Wear comfortable shoes and clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Bring sun protection and a water bottle, but avoid carrying a large bag because security screening and museum restrictions can slow entry.
