Plan 5–7 days for a first trip combining Vienna and Salzburg. With 8–10 days, you can add Innsbruck, Hallstatt, or more time in the Alps without making the itinerary feel rushed.
-
Austria is a year-round destination. Spring and autumn are excellent for exploring cities in milder weather. Summer is best for hiking, lakes, and outdoor activities, while winter brings skiing and Christmas markets.
-
Cards are widely accepted in Austria, but not everywhere. Keep some euros available for smaller shops, cafés, markets, and mountain destinations.
-
Trains are a convenient way to travel between Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. Austria’s major cities also have extensive public transportation, so a rental car is not usually necessary for a city-focused itinerary.
-
Pack comfortable walking shoes and layers that can adjust to changing weather. A compact rain jacket is useful throughout much of the year. For winter trips, bring a warm coat, gloves, and shoes suitable for cold or snowy conditions.
